Stress and your skin

Share Blog

With all the uncertainty and negative reports in the media about the corona virus, we are all experiencing a lot of stress. In this blog we would like to inform you about the effects of stress on your skin. With of course tips to relax more and nourish your skin optimally.

What does stress do to your skin?

Somewhere in the back of your mind, of course, you already know: stress is very bad for our body, including our skin. Stress often manifests itself quickly in the skin, in various ways: spots, dry, itchy, tired, troubled skin and acne. In addition, it also has effects on your entire body, such as restless sleep and weight gain. Finally, it can aggravate pre-existing skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

How is that actually possible? Peter Elias, professor of dermatology, discovered during his research that higher production of the stress hormone affects our barrier function in our skin. In addition, our “healthy” cells work more slowly, which means that bacteria are tackled less quickly and effectively. We are therefore more susceptible to outside influences.

Skin aging

Stress ages your skin faster. Free radicals have a greater influence on your cells due to stress. Because your cells work less well, you will see signs of aging sooner. Think of skin sagging and wrinkles.

Acne

As mentioned before, stress affects the skin's barrier function, making you more susceptible to bacteria. When a hormone rises, your body produces more sebum, which clogs your pores. In addition, we are less well protected, so that bacteria will settle in your clogged pores. The result are bacterial infections, which unfortunately can cause acne and scars.

Pigmentation

During stress, your body also produces more adrenaline, which also stimulates your pigment cells. Subcutaneous pigment can then emerge and express itself on the skin.

Dry and dull skin

Here too the reduced resistance of the skin plays a role. Irritations such as redness, eczema or blemishes appear more quickly on the skin. In addition, your skin offers less resistance to eczema and psoriasis, which can make them worse.

Due to delayed cell renewal, your skin becomes dull and dry. Old skin is less likely to be shed and new cells are less likely to be produced. You can see this all over the body.

What to do?

Of course, the most effective answer is to prevent stress. But as we all know, unfortunately this is not always possible. But how can you reduce the effects of stress?
